How to take care of Nigrum/atropurpure

As a general rule –Plant Nigrum/atropurpure in good light well-drained soil at a depth of 3 times the height of the bulb. Large flowering Alliums prefer full sun, but all other Alliums will tolerate partial shade.

Nigrum/atropurpure dislike been disturbed, so leave Nigrum/atropurpure for few years untouched. Divide clumps in autumn every 3-4 years of so. You can improve heavy soil by mixing in some builders sand.

Place Nigrum/atropurpure bulbs with the 'nose' upward into the soil. Always water well after planting to stimulate growth. For best results, as the buds materialize, add a high potash liquid feed in early spring to fertilize.

Allow foliage to die back naturally as this will send nutrients to Nigrum/atropurpure bulbs for next year’s bloom. Please note to survive harsh winters apply a mulch (straw or newspaper) over them to avoid any frost damage.

Remove when all danger of frost has passed.
