How to take care of Photinia Fraseri Red Robin
For best results soak the roots for approx. 2 hrs. before planting and water well after planting and for the next few weeks. Do not apply fertilizer until your trees have an established root system and have been in the ground for at least 6 -8 weeks. It could burn the new roots as they appear. Grows best in a soil with a low lime content. Needs a sunny location and well-drained soil. To keep the size of the plant in shape and to encourage the most colorful bark, remove a third of the stems back to ground level each spring. Photinia is quite quick growing once established, and may just need to be pruned back hard if growing out of control during summer . Pruning throughout the year helps to encourage this spectacular foliage. Fertilise in spring. Take cuttings in November to February.
As with other evergreens, it is best to prune Photinia Red Robin in the growing, and not dormant, seasons.
