Dianthus caryophyllus is commonly known as Carnations and Dianthus barbatus as Sweet William
Dianthus plants may be found as a hardy annual, biennial or perennial and most often used in borders or potted displays.
Dianthus Caryophyllus plants are affordable and produce nice cut flowers! Dianthus caryophyllus is a species of carnation and has been in culvitation for the last 2000 years. This herbaceous perennial produces sweetly scented ruffled flowers in all colours and the flowers can be used in fresh bouquets too.
Carnations thrives in well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Best treated as annuals or short-lived perennials.
Dianthus has edible flowers that have a pleasant spicy, floral, clove-like taste, ideal for decorating or adding to cakes and will add flavour to ice cream, sorbets, salads, fruit salad, dessert sauces, seafood and stir-fries. Dianthus also makes a colourful garnish but you must remove the white heel at the base of the petal first as this has a unpleasant taste.
