Trees are an important component of any landscape; they create focal points, shelter and light shade in the garden. Most importantly they produce oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere this is especially useful in today’s urban environments. Trees are a constantly changing feature in the garden, they change with the seasons and over the years they will change size and shape so it's important to find exactly the right tree to suit your garden.

The key considerations when ordering a tree are the mature size, the shape does it grow tall and upright or is it short and wide, is it evergreen or deciduous, does it flower or produce flowers or fruit.

We stock a wide range of trees for almost every garden situation choose from our wide range of Conifers, ornamental or fruit trees.

How to care for young trees

Watering is the most important activity to ensure the health of young trees. Too much water can choke the roots and can be as harmful as too little water. There should be 45cm/18 inches between the tree trunk and any weeds or grass. Always apply mulch after planting; it can keep the Soil warm during cool weather and cool during warm weather. Never apply fertiliser in the first year of planting trees. They need time to get established. Only damaged or dead limbs should be removed. Also during the first year, only broken or dead branches should be pruned from the tree leave as much of the leaf surface intact as possible.

In the second year, if the tree is growing well, the tree should be pruned only where branches rub together. Always stake young trees for support and they can be removed one year after planting. These surfaces are the tree's food factories.

Transplanting a container grown tree into your garden

You need to choose a location with plenty of room. Dig a spacious hole, big enough for the rootball and some extra space. To support the tree you can place a stake at an 45 degree angle. Add well rotted compost or manure to the bottom of the hole. Water the tree while it is still in the pot, then remove it and position it in the hole.Fill in the hole with a mixture of the earth you already have from the hole, manure and compost. Gently press the Soil down around the rootball and add a layer of mulch 3” around the tree. Tie the tree to the stake and give water if needed. Bare-root trees   It is best to plant bare-root trees immediately, in order to keep the fragile roots from drying out. If you can't plant because of weather or Soil conditions, store the trees in a cool place and keep the roots moist. Unpack tree and soak in water 3 to 6 hours. Dig a hole, wider than seems necessary, so the roots can spread freely.
