Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae and contains several hundred species that are native to warm-temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Some Hibiscus species represent nations such as Hibiscus syriacus is the national flower of South Korea, and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the national flower of Malaysia and of course the hibiscus is the national flower of Haiti.
Generally they are two different hibiscus varieties --a shrub hibiscus and a perennial hibiscus. The shrub hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus) is most commonly called a Rose-of-Sharon, but is also known as a shrub Althea.
