Ground covering perennial that flourishes in light shade under trees and shrubs. Grown mainly for its foliage of leathery, heart-shaped leaves which are borne on wiry stems that change colour throughout the season, pink veined in spring and overall bronze in autumn. Sprays of tiny lilac-purple spring flowers emerge before the new foliage each spring. Grandiflorum is a Japanese species of Epimedium commonly called bishop’s hat or barrenwort.

How to take care of Epimedium grandiflorum
Epimedium grandiflorum grows well in most well drained soil conditions but dislikes wet and alkaline soils. Remarkably drought tolerant once established. Epimedium grandiflorum don’t like a full sun position so plant in light or full shade. Whilst Epimedium grandiflorum cope well with dry shade, more moisture and humus in the soil is beneficial. The foliage is best cut off at ground level shortly before new leaves emerge in spring, so as to fully reveal their beauty of form and colour. Ideally, a mulch should then be applied to protect the new growth from frosts. Divide clumps in autumn or spring.
