This winter flowering deciduous shrub is a fantastic shrub to bring colour to your garden when it's most needed. Hamamelis otherwise known as the 'Witch Hazel’ produces lovely spidery red flowers in winter and is moderately drought tolerant!
Witch hazels make good specimen plants and are also effective in groups in a shrub border.
This hybrid is of garden origin and is a cross between H. japonica and H. mollis. The name intermedia means intermediate in colour form or habit.

How to take care of Hamamelis x intermedia Diane
For best results soak the roots for approx 2 hrs before planting and follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Hamamelis grows best in a shady spot planted in a well-drained acidic soil. It's slow growing and often becomes wide as they can get fairly tall. They need pruning/trimming every 2-3 years in winter, immediately after flowering. Feed with a general-purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. The curious petals withstand even the most serious frost without injury.
Those on chalk will struggle unless an area of ground can be improved with organic matter.
