How to take care of Portuguese laurel Prunus lusitanica
For best results soak the roots for approx 2 hrs before planting and water well after planting and for the next few weeks. It makes an excellent hedging plant. Plant in moist but well drained soil, it can cope with deep shade under trees as well as full sun. Water well for a few weeks after planting & never allow them to dry out completely. Laurels can be tough but they are not tolerant of waterlogged soil. Produces pretty white flowers mid spring & cherry red berries which are harmful if eaten in autumn. It is fast growing, it will grow into a loose tree if allowed to go unpruned, prune late spring or early summer after flowering. Cut out damaged & unwanted shoots. Plant three per meter for a dense hedge IMPORTANT All parts of the plant are toxic do not injest. Do not apply fertilizer until your trees have been in the ground for at least 6 -8 weeks. It could burn the new roots.
